Congratulations to our women’s reserves team, who’ve taken out the 2019 Premier C Reserves premiership after defeating Mazenod!

On a windy Sunday down at Mentone, the scene of last weeks preliminary finals, our girls got off to the perfect start, winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the first quarter. After the nerves had settled, they managed to head in to the quarter time break in front via a Mary Spillane goal and a number of behinds, with the scores reading Canterbury 1.5.11 to Mazenod 0.1.1. During the second quarter Mazenod made use of the wind, locking the ball in their forward half and managing to score 1.3 for the quarter while keeping our girls scoreless, with the half time scores showing we were up by a solitary point, Canterbury 1.5.11 to Mazenod 1.4.10.

The girls came out full of confidence in the third quarter and were able to hold Mazenod scoreless, while adding two fantastic goals through Georgia Hogan and Mary Spillane, which meant that we were 14 points up with a quarter to play – and Mazenod had the wind. The last quarter seemed to go on for an eternity, with Mazenod refusing to let the ball leave their forward 50 and peppering the goals. Luckily for us though only they were only able to register minor scores, until one of their girls kicked an amazing goal from the boundary line to reduce the margin to under a goal. Through pure grit and determination our girls were able to resist Mazenod’s forward surges for the rest of the game, moving the ball towards our goal via any means necessary, to hang on until the final siren rang, running out two point winners!!!

To top things off, Georgie Callaghan was judged best on ground after a dominant display in the ruck.

Congratulations to all involved, it’s an amazing achievement for the team to win a premiership in it’s first year, a true testament to the work that’s gone in to it since the season started.
