80s Legend Wayne Handley

Wayne Handley played for Canterbury in 81,82,83. Playing mainly at full-back he was a player who dominated his opponents, and was almost never beaten. Captain of the club, two time Best & Fairest winner & runner-up in 3 years, and League B&F and Runner up, in two of those years. Such was the calibre of this champion player. Handley was a member of our Centenary team in 81, that lost the GF by 5 points.

Wayne is pictured here outside the rooms in 1982 in the tracksuit pants & t-shirt. Next to Wayne on the left with his head down is the Late David Frohlich, and at the rear of the photo is the late Kenny Schwind, who was a committeeman at the club for years. The bloke crouched on the ground John Johnson former player and long term committee member has confirmed his attendance at Past Players Day 2018 on Saturday. JJ is a loyal Cobra.

Handley also took over as captain-coach from coach Ray McVilly. Wayne was pivotal in the setting up of the Park Orchards senior team, and when we played Park Orchards before moving leagues, we played for the Wayne Handley Cup.

Handley is still an occasional attendee at the Past Players day and is shortlisted for our Legends team.
