Canterbury’s 2024 VAFA Division 3 premiership wasn’t supposed to happen the way it did. Fourth on the ladder heading into finals, four sudden-death games against opponents who had beaten them during the year, and a Grand Final that went down to the final minutes.
But then, nothing about this club’s journey to the flag was straightforward.
Phil Johnston sat down with coach Josh Ward, captain James Boarotto, and some of the key figures behind the scenes to tell the full story of how the Cobras won the 2024 premiership — from a coaching crisis in 2021 that threatened to derail everything, to a season that took half the year to find its feet, to Rohan Walmsley standing 30 metres out with the game on the line.
