Round 5 2016

The Cobra’s tasted defeat in both grades on Saturday, the first time that’s happened since the club was promoted to D3. It was the Aquinas Bloods that inflicted the defeats on a day where a heavy breeze saw one end of the ground favoured, the margin being 33 points in the seniors and 92 in the reserves.

Saturday provided another ripping day for footy, in what has been one of the warmest starts to a season in recent memory. With a number of players returning to both the seniors and reserves sides we were confident of a stronger showing than the previous two weeks.

Starting the first quarter kicking into a strong breeze, we didn’t use the ball well and allowed our opposition to score from our mistakes. Our second quarter was a much improved effort, resulting us kicking a few goals and getting our game going.

The second half was much the same as the first, with us struggling into the breeze but finishing strongly with more  forward entries resulting in additional scoring opportunities. After the last few weeks it was exciting for the guys to get our forward line functioning and scoring more heavily than we have in recent times.  We had strong efforts all day from Terence, Zak, Stalsy, Arun and Clunks.

With a few more players returning this week and bringing the same level of tackling pressure that has been present recently we will really take it up to our top of the table opponents this week.

We set out to Ringwood to play Aquinas in a big game for us. The chance to be five zip before taking on "The Big Two" (Glen Eira and Hawthorn) was the prize, but unfortunately we were unable to do the job. With some key players missing once again, we tried a few players in different positions.

Kicking against a strong breeze in the first, we skipped away to a two goal to one lead early but that was the last time we were ahead on the scoreboard for the day. Aquinas defenders were running forward unaccompanied by their opponents and an onslaught eventuated. Seven goals to two at quarter time had us in a difficult spot but we hoped that we would be similarly productive with the breeze.

We weren’t. While Lowden and Johnson were giving us good scoring opportunities, too many times we gave up hard fought advantages with undisciplined acts that cost us goals. At some stage we will hopefully learn that playing football is usually more productive than arguing with umpires. At half time we were a couple of goals down and well and truly in the contest.

We battled hard into the breeze in for the next fifteen minutes or so before Aquinas began to hurt us on the scoreboard. Skill errors and lack of defensive running were the main reasons.

Eight goals down at the last change was a difficult task but not impossible as we had a strong breeze at our backs in the last. Our chance of victory was quickly snuffed out when some of our players were completely sucked in buy their opponents and once again gifted our opponents easy goals. Ten goals down early in the last quarter our players lost the belief. The breeze helped us reduce the margin but the game was over. A disappointing result.

Wombat was outstanding all day, and Lowden was dominant at both ends of the ground, despite some inaccurate kicking. Mitch Szabo and Scooter never stopped working, and Buckets, Richie Hobson and Moods were all pretty good for us.

Next week sees us with a chance to redeem ourselves as we take on the undefeated Glen Eira Gryphons at The Snakepit.

Cobras netball

The netball teams that were established earlier in the year have been representing the club well! With teams in Richmond, Doncaster and Vermont, the club is certainly covering a lot of territory!

  • The Richmond ladies team this week had the bye, so still sit atop the ladder undefeated!
  • The Doncaster ladies team unfortunately went down last week, and battled hard last night though unfortunately fell short by 5 goals.
  • And the Vermont mixed team had a 23 goal win on Tuesday night, well done Cobras!

If you’d like to get involved with a team, even as a fill in when required, please contact netball@canterburyfootball.club

We’re back at the Snake Pit this week as we host Glen Eira, who along with Hawthorn remain the two undefeated teams in our division. Our seniors will be looking to get back on the winners board, while the reserves have been putting in more complete performances the last couple of weeks, an upset for their game could be on the cards!

Also taking place this week is the annual ladies day, details for which can be found at the top of this email. All ladies are invited to attend, the more the merrier!
