Saturday saw the Cobra’s return to the Snake Pit after a few weeks away, and while Mother Nature did her best putting on a fantastic day weather wise, our boys weren’t able to get the job done against the strong teams of Glen Eira. The seniors fought it out in a see-sawing game in which the lead swapped many times, though ultimately went down by 13 points. The reserves on the other hand were up against it from early on as injuries struck, and at one point were down to 16 fit men on the field, the final margin of 142 certainly not reflecting the improved effort that was put in on the day.
A big thank you to all the ladies that made it down on Saturday to the annual ladies day, a great day was had by all in attendance. Thanks also to those that had a hand in organising the day, especially Kate Kletzmayr who worked tirelessly in making sure the day ran smoothly.

Saturday was a tough day for the reserves. Despite some welcome additions into the side from the previous week we lost a number of players to injury throughout the day, finishing the game with 16 players on the field.
Aside from the first quarter where our ball use and turn overs let us down, we took it up to our opposition all day. Despite the lack of rotations and the loss of key personnel our players did not stop trying and should be proud of the way they approached game in difficult circumstances. In particular we strong performances from Turbo, Arun, BJ and Clunks.
Our tackling efforts and contested footy have improved over recent weeks and by continuing to work on these areas and improve our skills we will be more competitive as the season progresses.

Last week we hosted the undefeated Glen Eira at the Snakepit. We knew that we would be in for a tough game and so it proved to be. We relished the opportunity to test ourselves against one of the competition benchmarks, knowing that if we are to have a successful season, we need to be able to beat the top sides.
Yet again, we started off kicking into a stiff breeze and while we were very competitive, Glen Eira skipped out to a 4 goal lead at quarter time. During the second quarter we fought back and went into the main break with the game evenly poised.
In previous weeks, our third quarters have been terrible and kicking into the breeze we faced a big challenge. We kicked 2 of the first 3 goals of the quarter to hit the lead, and at the last change we were well in touch – only 3 goals down and kicking with the wind. Unfortunately while we were able to kick 5 goals, Glen Eira managed 4 and held on to win by a couple.
After a big week on the track our performance had improved dramatically – it was good, but not quite good enough to match it with a top side. Critical mistakes and some basic skill errors at the wrong times ended up costing us the game. We need to keep working hard and results will come our way.
Johnno was a wonderful physical presence for us up forward and Tom Lowden played a great game for us at both ends of the ground. Wombat gave it his all as usual and as well as a consummate midfield exhibition, he managed 4 majors. Mitch Szabo was fantastic until he was injured, and Murph gave us plenty of run. Drizz continues to inprove with a good game on the inside and the outside.
Sadly Jim Wilson and Mitch suffered what look to be serious injuries so others will get their chance this week against ladder leader Hawthorn.

- And the Vermont mixed team stormed home to win by 22 goals in their Tuesday night match and now sit third on their ladder.

This week we travel just down the road to Rathmines Road Reserve to do battle with our old D4 rivals in Hawthorn. They’ve been posting some impressive results, though after last weeks performance in the seniors, it would suggest it won’t be long before the Cobra’s are back on the winners list.
We’ll be back at the Harp from 6.30pm this week to do the weekly awards, don’t forget about the $22 parma & pot deal upon showing your Canterbury Harp card.
