It was our chance to redeem ourselves against Aquinas this round and put our best foot forward for the run home. The breezy conditions would see most of the play on the outer side for most of the day and would make scoring quite difficult.

It had to be a pressure day. With a few familiar faces back in the twenty two the side looked the goods to knock off “the bloods”. The opener was on for young and old. There system around the stoppage was quite well structured and the boys would have to be on their toes to combat this. The game was fairly even although the scoreboard would show a ten point lead to the opposition. Poor conversion would again see us with a lot of the ball but trailing on the score sheet.

The first two majors went to Aquinas but we answered back with two of our own. The last half of the second was on our terms and some creative football from half back and use of the middle was leading to good entries. If we had the rub of the green things may have opened up even more. Only trailing by a kick at half time.

We had managed to shut their game down for most of the third. Only allowing them one goal was a terrific result. Bourky and Mitch kicking one each to give us a five point lead going into the last. Our game sense was to credit the comeback. The guys held possession when required and broke the lines with run and some great link play.

The last was a different story. Aquinas came out of the blocks hard. They piled on three goals in four minutes. All hope wasn’t lost and to the guys credit just kept fighting. Bridging the gap to eleven points and a few crucial misses would see the fightback come to an end by twelve points.

I can’t commend the guys highly enough for their efforts. However it just highlights the need to keep plugging away with getting our game really sharp. The need to keep working on fitness and high touches at training is evident. We’ll keep drilling into this because our best can match it with anyone.
