Full of excitement and nerves, the CFCW Senior women arrived at Lindsay Hassett Oval to cold still conditions for their semi final against rival South Melbourne.
A brief warm up later, and the game was underway in dry conditions.
D. Chesterton and C. Highfield got the ball moving early, creating some good forward entries for the likes of S. Leondidis and M. Henschke to work with, leading to the CobraW Seniors taking a lead of 11 points into the first break.
However, South Melbourne responded strongly in the second quarter, kicking two goals, putting some strong pressure back on the Canterbury Women, who took only a 7 point lead into half time.
The third quarter proved to be another strong contest, with the CFCW seniors managing to kick another major, and hold the home side scoreless.
A very tough last quarter ensued, with South Melbourne driving hard into their forward line, giving the away sides defence plenty of work and communication.
At the final siren, the CobraW’s led by 15 points, making it the first ever finals appearance and finals win for the women’s teams for the club’s history.
The effort across the board by all players was strong, with some fantastic inside mid work by R. Azzopardi and A. Milne driving the game forward from brilliant taps by L. Rinaldi.
Defence, especially T. Andrews, M. Guerin, L. McMullin and E. Pittonet was stellar, with some great rebound work by A. Miller also proving to be extremely beneficial to the teams efforts.
The entire team is to be congratulated on their gallant and consistent efforts.

Weekend been, our Canterbury W Development squad had the opportunity to face off in their first final. Walking into the rooms many girls were nervous yet there was defiantly an air of an excitement amongst the playing group. The message was delivered that the team was to play hard attacking football to put the opposition on the back foot and that is what happened.
From the first bounce the Cobras attacked the goals in droves putting on two quick majors in a row. Yarra Old Grammarians were on the defensive early which was exactly what we wanted as a squad. Georgie Callaghan and Ange Payne did a power of worth through the middle while Mary Spillane was dangerous up forward getting the first six points of the afternoon. Late in the quarter Yarra rallied somewhat matching our intensity. At quarter time the ladies were instructed to not take the foot off the peddle and increase our intensity.
The second quarter was defiantly not our best showing not adding to our score card and allowing Yarra to play with freedom and bring about their first score of the afternoon at half time the girls were asked to dig deep and redeem themselves after what was a poor showing by their standards.
In the last half the girls responded kicking 4 more goals to beating the highest score of the year. what was shown when the team was switched on was exciting to watch and gives a fair bit of hope headed into this week. Full credit to Yarra for making it this far, but luckily for us we were able to run away 20 point victors.
This week; South Melbourne. This is a team we haven’t beaten all year, they’re hard and tough and don’t allow teams to score easily. Our development team will be out for redemption this weekend after a poor showing earlier in the season against South Melbourne. This team has something special about it however, there is a desire to win and work together to win. I am excited about this weekend, because I know that any game we enter we are always a chance to win.

Taking on Emmaus on their home patch would be a tough ask. With ordinary conditions for the day it would be an in and under kind of match.
Well the Animals jumped out of the blocks and we had little answer for their stoppage dominance. They were piling it on and we just couldn’t arrest momentum. Two late Canterbury goals brought the deficit back to twenty nine points at quarter time.
The guys seemed to shake off the sleepy start in the second and played some really good footy. The pressure was up and we had a few good looks at the big sticks. We pegged back four goals to one in a strong display.
In a game of ebbs and flows St Leos took control again in the third and drew further away but hadn’t completely shut the door. We were fighting hard but just couldn’t quite put a big enough dent in the margin. It had crept back out to twenty two points.
The boys rallied in the last and gave it everything. A few early goals made it pretty juicy. St Leos answered back and kept us at arm’s length. If not for the slow start who knows what might’ve been. Going down by twenty points.
It’s not all done and dusted for the seniors. Just going to have to do it the hard way. Must win the remaining games V Nth Brunswick and the ever anticipated rematch against Westbourne at the pit.
Let’s get this done.
