The Cobra Cup was up for grabs in round three and a chance for the new faces to feast on the support of the fill the hill campaign. Our first home game would be no easy assignment as Manningham were traveling nicely for the start to the season.
The opening minutes were red hot and it was going to take a mighty effort to sustain this tempo for the four quarters. They had three more scoring shots by the break but costly errors were keeping us in the game. Only three points down at quarter time we were more than competitive.
The change of ends would have us going into the North Westerly at the pit. Manningham were sowing their dominance at stoppages and we had to fight hard through general play to get any momentum. They had doubled our scoring shots for the quarter but again were keeping us in the hunt by wayward kicking. A fantastic effort and late goal on the halftime siren by Bourkey only had us behind by thirteen points at the long change.
Upon reflection of what was working and not, lead to some tactical changes. Adopting a different method for the third quarter saw the game open up a touch. We seemed stronger in general play and was putting more pressure at the source. Six goals to one was the result and Cam Woods doing an excellent job of shutting down Sukkel. The boys had swung it to be twenty points in our favour. Awesome footy and the hill were like an extra player on the field.
An even last chapter was to play out. A little bit tight at time but we answered when needed. Shutting the game down to once again have the Cobra cup in our possession. Running out eventual eighteen point victors. The third was one of the best quarters of footy I have seen Canterbury play really exciting stuff.
Pats on the back for Woody and the scoobies for making it a double W on the day.
Lets get a good session in through the week and set ourselves for the crosstown grudge match V Westbourne.
