Round 3 2016

Another week at the Snake Pit saw another victory in the seniors, though the final margin of 4 points was much closer than that of previous weeks. In the reserves, an unrelenting UHS-VU side played a solid 4 quarter game and had the Cobras well beaten across the ground, running out easy winners.

Congratulations to club president BJ Lashbrook who played his 100th game for the club on Saturday.

Saturday was a tough day for the ressies. We had a number of key outs and needed a number of snakes from the broader Cobra community fill in.

Our opponents were well structured, ran hard and peppered our defence throughout the game. Despite being inundated all day a number of guys stood up under pressure. A massive game in his 100th for the club by BJ Lashbrook and strong contributions from Clunks, Stals, Robo and the pirate.

A big congrats to the prez on his milestone, his efforts around the club (together with a number of others) are what keeps the club ticking and allow us to take the field each week.

A big week on the track and a stronger commitment to the contest will see us rebound this Saturday. Looking forward to turning things around on game day and getting our season back on track.

Round three and our second home game in succession. Once again we played a side (UHS-VU) that we knew very little about, other than that they had been very competitive against two good sides but were yet to break through with a win. A few big outs from our side meant that some players would get their chance, with Richie Hobson making his debuts for the Cobbies.

The game started well with a couple of early goals to Buckets (one from a glorious left foot pass from Hobson) giving us the early lead. The game rolled along nicely in the second quarter and half time saw us with a commanding 27 point lead.

And then everything changed. Not sure if we were complacent, or whether the Students saw their season slipping away but they completely took control of the game in the third quarter. Where previously we had been winning clearances, the Students took over and began to win all of the contested ball. During the third quarter we hardly took the ball past the centre, and when we did, we choose poor options to go to. Our worst quarter of the year saw us score a solitary point while our opposition kicked six goals to take an imposing 9 point lead into the last change.

We challenged our mids to begin winning the contested ball, and they responded. In what was a tense last thirty minutes, we ground out three goals and kept our opposition to one, and we skulked home by four points. It was an ugly win without question, but it was a win nonetheless, and we now have a healthy three wins in the bank from three games.

Martin Astbury was once again a tower of strength in our backline, and Mood’s great form continued with another silky display. Buckets was again impacting the scoreboard with four snags (to lead the competition), and Gash and Hummer were fantastic fill in CHFs. Rob Goodwin played another beauty and Wombat exerted his usual influence to get us over the line. Jim Wilson was given the senior rucking duties and played his best game to date. Fish, Drizz and Scooter were all excellent contributors.

Next week we are away (but not far away) to Swinburne at St. James Park. Hopefully we will put together four consistent quarters and once again bring home the four points.

This week we’re heading just around the corner to St James Park in Hawthorn where we’ll meet the Razorbacks from Swinburne Uni. Judging by the results each week it’s becoming clearer that we’re playing in a very even division, and as the seniors saw last week, one bad quarter can almost cost you a game. Eight solid quarters this week will get the points!
