Round 4 2016

On Saturday the Cobras ventured just down the road to St James Park in Hawthorn to take on local rivals in Swinburne University. The seniors were very lucky to get over the line by 3 points, courtesy of Mitch Szabo kicking a goal with about a minute left on the clock. The reserves had another tough day on the field, and were outplayed all game by the Razorbacks.

Ladies game

While we were planning on holding a womens game this week between the two regular games, our hosts Aquinas have decided to cancel the game due to logistical issues, and both clubs were also struggling for numbers. We will certainly endeavour to get this match up and running to celebrate womens football next year.

Cobras netball

The netball teams that were established earlier in the year have been representing the club well! With teams in Richmond, Doncaster and Vermont, the club is certainly covering a lot of territory!

  • The Richmond ladies team who play on Tuesdays are currently undefeated and sit top of their division after a 23 goal win last night, great stuff girls!
  • The Doncaster ladies team who play on Wednesdays are also doing well, currently sitting in the middle of their table after a couple of games played.
  • And the Vermont mixed team who also play on Tuesdays are currently sitting 4th in a 10 team competition.

Great to see all teams getting some wins on the board, though most of all enjoying themselves. If you’d like to get involved with a team, even as a fill in when required, please contact netball@canterburyfootball.club

Saturday bought a ripping day for footy and a lot of changes to team from the week before. We were up against strong opposition with a number of key big blokes up forward.

We had a great effort from everyone across all four quarters despite being two short on he bench within the first 10 minutes and being to 18 men in the last quarter. In particular we had some big efforts from Turbo, Burso, Tom H, Leehron and Chuck.

Despite the margin I was extremely proud of our players who stuck together and brought fantastic tackling pressure all day. Thanks to all those who filled in on late notice.

We will be back better and stronger next week.

Round 4 saw us chasing our fourth successive win and we had to travel not too far to meet the Swinburne Razorbacks. A difficult week at selection thanks to music festivals, study commitments, bike rides, bereavements and sore ankles meant we were forced to make another 6 changes. This gave Arun Panjawani his first game for Canterbury, and we welcomed Ash Stals and Mitch Szabo back for their first games of 2016.

St James Park is a very small ground and the Northerly breeze was blowing strongly to one end. We kicked against it in the first term and Swinburne quickly rattled on 3 goals before we made an forward forays. But we began to work our way back into the game with clever ball use and by quarter time, both sides had kicked 4 goals.

The second quarter we had the benefit of the breeze but were unable to fully capitalise on it. We opend up a two goal lead at the main change. Reptile and Fridage were giving us great targets, and Buckets and Wombat were cleaning up anything that hit the deck. Shannon Noel converted some excellent opportunities for us. Lowds returning to defence after some years was unstoppable, and Marty continued his excellent form down back.

We were smashed in the third quarter. The wind had died down, but for the second successive week, we were well beaten in the stoppages in this quarter and if not for Swinburne’s inaccuracy, we would have been out of the game.

But we weren’t. At the last change we needed four goals to win and had the benefit of a much slighter breeze than it had been early. Some honest grit and bloody hard work from our mids gave us first use again and we slowly narrowed the gap. With a couple of minutes to go, we need two goals and victory looked unlikely. Fridge gong onto the ball had changed the midfield dynamic in our favour, and while Gash and Fridge were involved in a push and shove, Buckets converted a clutch goal to make the difference less than a kick.We had our belief back and victory seemed possible. Some desperate Swinburne attacks were repelled by our defenders, and with seconds remaining, Mitch Szabo capped off a great game by cooly snapping one around the corner to put our noses in front. The siren sounded soon after and somehow we remain undefeated.

A great victory.

Round 5 sees us heading out to Ringwood to lock horns with Aquinas. The results haven’t gone the way many expected for the Bloods, though they’ll be out to get some blood of their own on their home track this weekend.

If you can’t make it to the game, join us at the Harp on Saturday night from 7pm, show your Harp card and grab a $22 parma and pot, it’s hard to say no!
